OPI Katy Perry and Serena Williams Grand Slam Collections (with Black Shatter Crackle Polish!) Spring 2011

These are technically two separate collections, but they really seem to go together and combined they make six polishes which is about the size of the average polish collection.

I don't know anything about Katy Perry besides the fact that she's cute, has really cool nail designs and blue hair. I do know Serena Williams, though; champion tennis star and brand new nail tech. That's one of the most interesting celebrity collaborations I've seen!

Katy Perry has four brand new colors plus Black Shatter crackle topcoat and Serena Williams has one color plus Black Shatter to go along with it. Black Shatter really is the star here, but all the colors are fantastic:

Last Friday Night. This is opalescent glitter with some tiny iridescent electric blue sparkles in a sheer blue tinted base. I know I have at least one other polish that's similar to this- it's either Sally Hansen or Confetti, possibly both even... But this one has that extra something to it. The tiny blue sparkles. They're amazing. They glow and shimmer and light up the whole polish. This is a very sheer shade. It's perfect for layering but you can also wear it alone and I think the end result is magical. Since it's so sheer it doesn't have the same depth as bottle color, but I think it still looks fantastic.


Not Like The Movies. I took a million pictures of this one because it's too awesome for just one shot! It's a purple/green duochrome with some really delicate shiny flaky shimmer in it. It's a little sheer and frosty but it totally works. This is one of the few metallic duochromes to incorporate glitter and actually have it work. Normally a metallic frost formula like this creates a lumpy, bumpy, bubbly look when combined with glitter, but OPI totally nailed it. No lumps. All the glitter shows up and it's absolutely perfect. It seems like a lot more care went into creating this frost/glitter shade than some of the ones from other brands I've tried lately. It's not too frosty, the duochrome is really strong and the glitter adds a really nice touch to it. This might be my favorite of the collection (aside from Black Shatter). I love the name, too.


Teenage Dream. This reminds me of the pictures I've seen of some of those really rare Japanese and UK exclusive OPI glitters I've seen, but I don't have any of them to compare! This is a light pink fine glitter mixed with some holo-opal medium sized glitter in a clear base. It's an opaque glitter and might be a little too dense for layering. It's so pretty and fairy-like. Am I getting sick? That's two pinks in a row that I've fallen for this year!


The One That Got Away. My pictures of this aren't the best- it's one of those crazy luminous shades that make my camera do that weird glowy radioactive looking thing... But if you'll take a look at the bottle color you'll get a better idea of how it looks in real life. It's a red-toned wine purple with some really shiny metallic flaky shimmer in it. You have to see this in person, it just glows!

This collection comes with the brand new Black Shatter topcoat. If you've been into nail polish for a while, you may recall some of the older crackle polishes- namely the Cover Girl Crackles. You apply them over a base color and as they dry they crack and give a neat two-toned cracked/shattered look. This is basically the same thing but with a much improved formula.

It is recommended to apply this over completely dry polish and I agree with that recommendation. You get the best shatter effect that way. When the polish is still slightly wet, the topcoat doesn't crack as much and you end up with larger pieces and not as much of the under color showing through. And, if the polish is too wet, the crackling action and fragmentation of the topcoat takes the wet polish with it, leaving bald spots in between the cracked pieces.

Black Shatter does dry a bit matte and it has texture to it, so I'd recommend a good coat of topcoat after it's done doing its thing. This smooths the texture but also helps keep the cracked pieces on- they can actually fall off when they're fully dry!

Serena Williams Grand Slam Collection

Simply Smashing. This is a yellow-green "lemon lime" type of shade. It might just be the power of suggestion, but it reminds me of a tennis ball. Am I that impressionable? But it really does make me think of a tennis ball, especially one that's been used for playing fetch for a couple weeks. It's a little bit dirty, not quite neon green like a brand new tennis ball. It has a glass fleck type of shimmer- really bright shiny particles of shimmer. Slightly duochrome, too, there's a bit of orange reflect on this shade.

And here it is paired with Black Shatter:

Isn't Black Shatter great? I'm a bit obsessed with it already. It applies so easily and shatters so quickly. With the old ones you used to have to wait a while and it would take forever to dry. The old generations of crackle polish were also a huge pain to remove. They stuck to your nails like cement and took forever to dissolve with acetone. OPI's Black Shatter crackle polish removes as easily as any normal polish and dries really quickly. It's really, really great and I kinda want to use it for every manicure now.

Just for fun, here's what it looks like over yellow:

I had China Glaze Lighthouse on when Black Shatter arrived and I had to play with it immediately. In my opinion, it's quite a stunning combination. I love the contrast between the creme black shards and the glimmery yellow brightness. I think Black Shatter looks amazing over sparkly shades.


This is one has a coat of OPI Last Friday Night over China Glaze Lighthouse and then a final coat of OPI Black Shatter. The pretty opal glitter might be a little hard to see in these pictures, but it added a really nice subtle something that made it just that much more interesting.

The formula on these was good. All of the shades were on the sheer side and needed at least three coats. I did three coats in all these pictures. Last Friday Night was unusually thick and I'm not sure if that's normal. It applied just fine, but it was almost jelly-like, I'm wondering if mine was a little dried out when I got it because it didn't look completely full, either. Anyway, application was good aside from the sheerness of the shades. Dry time was very good and removal was painless.

I love all the colors in this set. Nothing boring, nothing plain, it's 100% fun. I love the edgy and fun look of Black Shatter and it does look rather nice over all these shades. I think OPI did an excellent job on these. It's bright and shiny, glitter-heavy, sparkly, playful and includes an improved formula Crackle topcoat to make it even more fun. I'm absurdly happy to see that crackle polish, too. It's such a fun look and it really makes people stop and ask you how you did it!

My only complaint is that I wish there were more colors! But I am quite satisfied with the collections as they are. There's duochrome, glitter, a little holo, and an awesome crackle polish. Not finding any flaws at all. They didn't play it safe this time and I'm thankful for that!

Lindsay Lohan Avoids the Danger Zone

Lindsay Lohan has finally realized she needs to avoid "those people" ... the ones creating massive temptation ... so say confidants of LiLo, who spoke with TMZ.


We're told Lindsay is spending the long weekend with a close friend by the beach in Venice, CA. As one friend put it, "She needs to get away from that scene ... and she knows it."

But it's not just the Hollywood clubs that create the danger of relapse. "The people who hang around her are such moochers, and bad energy," says one friend, adding, "she needs to cut them out and I think that's what she's starting to realize."

As for what Lindsay is doing, we're told a lot of sleeping, watching TV and movies. And shopping. Interesting ... more than one person says she desperately needs sleep.

The people we've spoken with say it's definitely too early to tell, but Lindsay had at least temporarily turned a corner and is healthier than she's been "in a long time."

After their concert in London, the Black Eyed Peas threw a Bacardi-sponsored afterparty at indigoO2 – and they were joined on stage by Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. The actor performed a duet with will.i.am called "Some Day," from his upcoming movie Knight and Day, while his wife salsa danced with Fergie. "It was unreal," a source says. "Everyone was going crazy." Later in the evening, the actors got cozy on the dancefloor. "They were all over each other," the source says, "giggling and dancing all night."

Matt Lauer and wife Annette were spotted having a double date at Le Caprice, the restaurant inside New York's Pierre Hotel. The two couples were deep in conversation throughout the night, sharing bites of their entrees and enjoying some wine. According to a source, the Today show host was especially in high spirits.

After sunning themselves on a daybed and swilling poolside mojitos at Las Vegas's Tao Beach's Memorial Day bash, Mark Ballas had a late-night dinner at Lavo with Ashley Roberts – and the cozy couple wasn't alone. The Dancing with the Stars pro's dad, Corky, shared the meal with them. After dinner, Corky showed off some tango moves in the dining room before the three headed over to the nightclub. Across the way, Forest Whitaker was dining with wife Keisha and a producer friend. The trio was greeted at one point during their meal by Stacy Keibler, who came to say hello.

Also in Sin City: Jenna Jameson and hubby Tito Ortiz, who were spotted at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, where they took in the UFC afterparty at Vanity nightclub.

Celine Dion is Pregnant with Twins!

Another high note for Celine Dion: she's expecting again!

A rep for the singer confirms to UsMagazine.com that Dion is pregnant -- with twins!

Dion underwent her sixth in-vitro fertilization attempt, staying in New York City for a month and also undergoing acupuncture treatments -- "and it worked!" the rep says.

The "My Heart Will Go On" chanteuse and manager husband Rene Angelil, 68, "are both extremely excited. But really, since this was the sixth time, they just want a healthy pregnancy," the rep adds.

Dion is currently 14 weeks along, and will find out the gender of their child next month. The baby-to-be will join big brother Rene-Charles, who turned 9 in January. Rene-Charles was also conceived by in vitro after six years of trying. Last year, Dion revealed to Oprah Winfrey that she had suffered a miscarriage after another IVF attempt. "We're living the reality of the majority of couples who face these procreation techniques," her husband Angelil told a French-Canadian newspaper in November.The Grammy-winning singer spoke to Us Weekly recently, before learning of her pregnancy. "We are doing IVF and hoping for the best, " Dion told Us at the time. "My greatest joy would be to announce I'm pregnant!"

Jack Nicholson Asks Jessica Simpson Out on a Date!

London: Hollywood veteran Jack Nicholson has proved he`s still a ladies` man by asking pop star Jessica Simpson out on a date.

"The Departed" star has been linked to a number of actresses and models over the years, including Lara Flynn Boyle, Anjelica Huston and Michelle Phillips, and has fathered six children with different women. The 73-year-old has reportedly invited 29-year-old singer Simpson to join him for an evening together, reports thesun.co.uk.

"I have no idea how Jack got my number as we`ve never met. He asked if I wanted to go to his Beverly Hills house for dinner," said Simpson, who declined the offer.

Madonna Celebrating Gay Malawians` Release

London: Pop diva Madonna has thanked fans for backing a campaign calling for the release of two jailed gay men in Malawi after the pair was freed at the weekend.

"I have always believed love conquers all - yesterday I got to see it in action. In the last week over 30,000 of you added your name to mine calling for the release of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga - the Malawi couple sentenced to 14 years hard labour for the `crime` of homosexuality," she posted on her Raising Malawi website.

"With incredible joy, I am writing to share with you that Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has ordered their release. Steven and Tiwonge were freed on Saturday night. They have won their freedom and you have been a part of it. We celebrate this astounding turn of events with Steven, Tiwonge, and the countless Malawians fighting for their release. It is a historic day for Malawi."

Earlier this month (May 10), the pop superstar branded the incarceration of Monjeza and Chimbalanga "backward" after they were both sentenced to 14 years behind bars for being homosexual.

She urged Malawians and her followers across the world to protest the judge`s decision by adding their names to a petition against the ruling, reports contactmusic.com.

After receiving the petition and meeting with United Nation ambassadors, Malawi`s President Bingu wa Mutharika pardoned the pair and ordered their immediate release on Saturday.

And Madonna, who adopted two of her children, David and Mercy, from the country and is financing the construction of a girls` school in the capital, is delighted but at the same time she is concerned about their safety.

"Though they are free from prison, sadly their safety and future in Malawi is still unknown. I hope this is just the beginning of our work together. Human rights injustices continue for so many Malawians facing poverty, disease, and a lack of critical resources.

"There are still over two million orphans and vulnerable children who need to experience love`s embrace. It is going to take the love and creativity of all of us to bring justice to the people of Malawi," she wrote.

Jessica Simpson: Doing "Price of Beauty" Was Like "Missionary Work"

To Jessica Simpson, The Price of Beauty was more than just a reality show -- it's her life's calling!

"I'm not saying I'm changing the world," a teary-eyed Simpson said while accepting an award at the Gracies (which honor women in radio and TV) in Beverly Hills Tuesday.

"But...to be able to sit with my Dad and [create] Price of Beauty," she said of her VH1 show, in which she traveled the world to explore definitions of beauty in various cultures. "It's similar to missionary work. It was what I was called to do and called to be." On the series, Simpson visited a "fattening hut" in Uganda, munched fried cockroaches in Thailand, and walked a couture runway in Paris.

Despite the show's lackluster ratings and tepid reviews, the 29-year-old star said "it's changing my life, and that's what it's all about. We're all women, we are strong and there is always a life to change, and you are powerful enough to do it!"

The Gracies honored Simpson for her strength and entrepreneurial endeavors in the face of adversity and public scrutiny.

Earlier in her speech, Simpson quipped, "I'm not used to people talking so nice about me," and explained that she felt "called to the ministry" at church camp (dad Joe Simpson is a preacher) when she was 13.

"I remember calling my parents on a pay phone and said 'Dad? Mom? Guess what? I've been called into the ministry!'" she recounted to the crowd. "And they were like... 'Whoawhoawhoa, did you sign anything? Are you sure you wanna take this on?' And I was like 'Sure, really! I know right now at this very moment I can change the world. Somehow.'"

Heidi Montag: 'This is going to be the best summer of my life'

The Hills star Heidi Montag has called off her relationship with Spencer Pratt - and she couldn't be happier.

After annoucing her marriage to her co-star is over, she took to her Twitter page, telling fans: 'This is going to be the best summer of my life.'

She is swiftly making other living arrangements, and preparing to move in with Jennifer Bunney, who briefly appeared in the MTV series.

'Heidi and I are moving into a Malibu beach house this summer,' Bunney told RadarOnline.com. 'We’re really excited to do girly things and show people who we really are and that we’re really fun, sweet and loyal girls.'

Montag and Pratt's very public relationship has become increasingly bizarre in recent months, with Pratt admitting he had banned his wife from watching TV and using the internet.

Montag has also become estranged from her family and just weeks ago sought a restraining order against her mother, Darlene Egelhoff.

'Heidi is looking to move out due to all the fake bad press that Spencer controls,' a spokesperson for the star told TMZ yesterday.

'She's tired of it and is looking for a place and wants to focus on her acting career.'

The announcement shed light on 23-year-old Montag's earlier tweet, which read: 'I am not Heidi Pratt, I am Heidi Montag.'

Montag, a self-confessed plastic surgery addict who underwent 10 procedures in one day in November, has been trying to carve out a career as a Hollywood actress.

Bandleader Kevin Eubanks Ends 18 Years With Leno

NEW YORK, N.Y. --

It’s a wrap for “Tonight Show” bandleader Kevin Eubanks after 18 years backing up host Jay Leno.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had an argument,” Leno said, bidding Eubanks farewell on Friday’s show. “We’ve had a lot of fun.”

Eubanks, whose duties included comic sidekick to Leno as well as guitarist, had been aboard since Leno took over NBC’s “Tonight” in 1992. Eubanks became musical director when Branford Marsalis left in 1995.

The 52-year-old Eubanks joined Leno last fall for the short-lived “The Jay Leno Show” in prime time, then came back to “Tonight” when Leno reclaimed the show from Conan O’Brien in March. O’Brien left NBC rather than move “Tonight” to a later slot to make room for Leno in late night.

In April, Eubanks announced his plans to depart, but he insisted the recent turmoil had played no part in his decision. He said he was seeking a career change of pace.

Exiting with Eubanks will be the other five members of the Tonight Show Band. They include vocalist and percussionist Vicki Randle, keyboardist Gerry Etkins, bass guitarist Derrick “Dock” Murdock, saxophonist Ralph Moore and drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith.

“We have gone through all this together,” said Eubanks, introducing and thanking them.

During the hourlong show, a clip reel highlighted comic moments Leno and Eubanks have shared through the years, then Eubanks was featured performing an original song.

He will be replaced by former “American Idol” music director Rickey Minor, who arrives with his own troupe June 7.

“The Tonight Show” will air reruns next week.

Kristen Stewart Feels 'Raped' by Paparazzi

Twilight star Kirsten Stewart says being photographed and falsely reported by paparazzi makes her feel she’s being raped. According to Showbizspy.com, the star told Britain’s magazine that she hates being stalked by men with cameras.

She said: "All you see is an actor or a celebrity lit up but a flash. It’s so… The photos are so… I feel like I’m looking at someone being raped. A lot of the time I can’t handle it. It’s f**ked. I never expected that this would be my life."

The star also admitted she has no career plans after completing work on The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, reports News.com.au. “Oddly enough I have a really clean horizon, I’m excited about the last few films I did coming out but other than that – I always have my next three things planned out so to have a clean horizon is pretty nice," she added in a behind-the-scenes interview for Flaunt magazine.

Kendra Wilkinson Opens up About Sex Tape

Kendra Wilkinson says it's the "hardest time" of her life as the sex tape she shot with her ex-boyfriend at age 18 goes public. Wilkinson, 24, shot the tape with Justin Frye and believed at the time they were "going to eventually marry."

"Of course we had sex like every couple does and every now and then we would videotape it. There's a lot of couples who do that," the New York Daily News quoted her, as saying. She added: "At that time I wasn't a celebrity. I didn't even know I was going to become a celebrity."

Now a wife to Philadelphia Eagles receiver Hank Baskett and a mum to their baby boy, the glamour girl is angry with her ex for selling the tape and tarnishing her reputation. She said: "It broke my heart because how can you do that when I have a baby? I have a kid. I have a husband. It just sucks."

Wilkinson's only relief is that her hubby is standing by her side. She said: “He's doing a good job because he's understanding. He's like, Kendra, we just have to hold our heads high because, yeah, we're going to get attacked, but we can't run. We have to hold hands and walk through this and face this fact.”

The former girlfriend of Simon Cowell has revealed she will be very sad to see the music mogul walk down the aisle with his fiancee Mezhgan Hussainy.

Sinitta, who has remained a close pal of Simon's since they ended their romance, also says she would like to play a key role in the 51-year-old's wedding.

"I'd like to give him away. It would be sad though. I said before he got engaged that I never thought he would get married," she says.

The singer also revealed recently she isn't sure if Simon will go ahead with the nuptials.

"I really don't know if he will go through with it. If he is really true to himself he probably won't."

Royal date for Prince William and Kate Middleton at Music Festival

Prince William and Kate Middleton added a touch of royalty to Wales' Big Weekend music festival.

The royal couple joined 20,000 music fans at the annual event, before meeting some of the acts backstage.

"He was a nice guy. We were just talking and getting familiar," said London rapper Tinie Tempah.

"I was a little bit overwhelmed but it was good. We've never met before. He just said he was, 'feeling everything and a big fan of the music'."

The Prince has been learning to fly helicopters at the nearby RAF Valley on Anglesey.
