
The Gardener's Color Wheel has tints on one side, and shades and tones on the other side (color + white, + black, and + grey respectively). It helps you pick complimentary colors, contrasting colors, and what's called the "triad" - for more info, check it out here.
So I picked a darkish mauve which was difficult to match with any one block of the color wheel, and decided to use a yellowy-green with it. I know the fabrics don't match the color wheel very well in the photo above, but they look more similar in life.
And this is the result. I think the colors work together very nicely, and I'm thrilled with the pattern. It's Christmasy, but not in an overpowering way.
